The thrill of Rocktober, the Blake Street Bombers, Todd Helton scooping a ball out of the dirt at first base and postcard-perfect summer nights at Coors Field. Colorado Rockies fans would never have been blessed with those cherished baseball memories had it not been for Jerry McMorris.
McMorris, an original Rockies owner and a man who will be forever remembered as the savior of Major League Baseball in Colorado, died Tuesday morning. He was 71.
In 1993, before the Rockies’ first-ever game at Mile High Stadium, McMorris addressed the team. It’s a moment outfielder Dante Bichette never forgot.
“He said: ‘Guys, the sky’s the limit. The dreams are out there for you guys to chase. Here’s your opportunity.’ That was big for us,” Bichette recalled. “I don’t think major-league baseball would have happened in Denver if not for him.”
