“We’re getting ready for CU vs. CSU over here in Afghanistan this week,” wrote Alex Banks (PolSci’11) when he posted this picture taken in Kajaki, located in the northern Helmend Province of Afghanistan. In addition to Alex, who is a second lieutenant, two other Buffs are in the battalion, captain Godwin and gunnery sergeant Cobb. One of Alex’s classmates, T.J. Perna (EnvSt’10) is serving to their south with a different unit. The four Marines participated in the NROTC program while they were in Boulder.
The Marines pictured are infantry men from a rifle company. Alex (pictured behind the flag wearing sunglasses) writes that the photo was taken immediately following a seven-hour security patrol where Alex spoke with local leaders about community improvements and helping their Afghan military brothers establish security in the region. The intent is to collaborate with the Afghan National Army in an effort to secure the area to prevent the Taliban from re-entering the region once the U.S. forces leave.
“Thanks for your support, Semper Fi and Go Buffs!” he writes.
